Sustainable development is open to varied interpretations and is subject to complex policy processes. Environmentalists regard protection of local economies and modification of consumption and lifestyle patterns as key elements of sustainable urban development. There are, however, a number of tensions between the 'ideal model' of sustainable development and a dominant EU/national policy agenda which emphasises growth and business-led change. These tensions are particularly acute in the context of a global city such as London.
The conference will bring together speakers from a variety of backgrounds including policy practitioners, academics, community organisations and environmental specialists. Key questions to be examined include:
- What does sustainable development mean in a global city context - -what are the tensions and opportunities?
- How are policies developed at the level of the EU/national government being interpreted and implemented by agencies and organisations in London?
- How do bottom-up/values driven approaches such as community-based entrepeneurship and partnerships fit into the picture?
- What is the role of the 'environmental sector' in encouraging the adoption of cleaner technologies and environmental best practice?
